1. Certification Overview
BIS regulates Indian product certification through mandatory ISI marking, CRS registration and voluntary schemes. Established over 50 years ago, it covers over 1,000 products. Mandatory-listed products need BIS approval before sale in India.
2. Certification Mark

3. Certification Categories
BIS certification currently has three categories:
1. Compulsory ISI mark type certification, comprising product testing, initial factory inspection and post-certification surveillance. Major categories include cement, food, automotive components and steel products.
2. BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), comprising product testing and post-certification surveillance. This includes tablets, microwave ovens, wireless keyboards, printer power adapters, LED lights, lithium batteries, power banks, mobile phones, smart card readers, UPS/inverters rated at or below 10 kVA, and rear-projection/LCD/LED televisions with screens of 32 inches or less.
3. BIS voluntary certification, available for products outside compulsory marking and registration schemes.
4. Product Scope
BIS has issued more than 30,000 product certificates. Certified manufacturers may affix the ISI label. The scope covers almost every industrial sector, including agricultural products, textiles and electronics.
