PTCRB assesses cellular terminal conformance, focusing on compatibility with mobile communications networks. Testing covers RF, protocols, SIM and audio, with specific items determined by supported frequency bands, functions and modules.
1. Certification Overview
As GSM/GPRS technology developed rapidly, North American network operators imposed increasingly demanding requirements on digital mobile terminals to protect network security and end users. In March 1997, they joined terminal manufacturers and independent GSM testing laboratories to form PTCRB. Focusing on GSM 850/1900 networks and terminals, the group developed conformance standards suited to North American GSM networks, recognized terminal test platforms and methods, and developed and approved further standards as GSM/GPRS technology and network capabilities evolved.
PTCRB is a quasi-mandatory certification carried out by third-party certification bodies. Although it is not governmental, all PCS terminal equipment entering the North American market must obtain PTCRB certification. CTIA administers the program.

4. Audio testing.
IV. Certification Timeline and Validity
PTCRB testing duration depends on the number of frequency bands and supported functions, such as data-only or voice-and-data operation and internal or external antennas. Whether the device uses an already certified module is an important factor. When it fully reuses approved PTCRB elements, certification takes approximately 2–3 weeks. The certificate has no fixed expiry.
